With the help of concrete examples from the real world and foreign language classrooms, the paper attempts to redefine the notion of third place (Kramsch 1993) in the social and critical sciences (Fairclough, 1989; Kramsch, 1993a and b; Pennycook, 1990; Byram, 1989, Byram et al., 1991; Kramsch & von Hoene, 1995; "culture becomes the very core of language teaching" (Kramsch, 1993, p. 8). This means that language teachers, in their role as cultural brokers, are often (Byram, 1989, 1997, 2008; Crozet, Liddicoat, & Lo Bianco, 1999; Kramsch, 1993;. Risager, 2007). We have everything to thank her for it. Kramsch (1993) puts it, an “expandable” fifth skill tacked on to the teaching of speaking, listening, reading and writing. If language is viewed as social practice, then culture should become the core of language teaching to the extent that cultural awareness should be viewed as enabling language proficiency (Kramsch, 1993: 8). I stake out briefly the nature of the challenge, and suggest that the notion of third culture must be seen less as a PLACE than as a symbolic PROCESS of meaning-making that differently from the intended purposes in contexts (Kramsch, 1993), and this highlights the importance of awareness of similarities and differences among different cultures. At this point, language may not ensure mutual intelligibility at desired level (Deardorff, 2011).
