One of the things I love about Rotary is that the people who join are truly focused on serving their community, both locally and globally. At a Rotary meeting, despite differences in professions, race, religion and politics, the people in the room are united in Rotary’s mission to serve, and to do so based on the principles of the 4-Way Test. The two sayings, modified to "He Profits Most Who Serves Best" and "Service Above Self," were quickly embraced by all Rotarians and were officially designated as Rotary mottoes at the 1950 convention in Detroit, Michigan. The Rotary Club of Los Angeles participates in at least six community service projects in the City of Los Angeles in partnership with other Rotary clubs within District 5280. These meaningful projects allow Rotarians to show "Service Above Self" while allowing for fellowship, diversity, integrity, and reinforcing the Four-Way Test. The Rotary motto Service Above Self conveys the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s more than 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide.
